I took advantage of a water damaged ceiling and wall and turned it into an opportunity to redecorate. The perfect, final touch to my new hallway was a decorative wall decal from Wall Written. My endless love decal was easy to apply and really made the difference in turning a house into a home!
Redecorating your home should be fun and satisfying. Unfortunately, sometimes we find it necessary to make repairs to walls and ceilings as a result of plumbing leaks or water damage from weather related incidents. That’s not quite as much fun as redecorating because you want to change colors or other decorative features in your home.
Repair Water Damage
One small drip can quickly turn into a river of water when your upstairs neighbor’s plumbing starts sending gallons of water across your ceiling and down your walls to puddle on your beautiful hardwood flooring.
After the repairs have been made in your neighbor’s home to stop the leak, the next step is to have them contact their homeowner’s insurance company and file a claim for your repairs. It can take a few weeks to come to a settlement and receive a check from them but it’s worth the wait. An investigator from the insurance company may come to your home to assess the loss but be sure to take several pictures of the fresh damage just in case you need them to back up your claim.
Now that you have the money to make the repairs to your damaged walls and ceiling, turn it into an opportunity not just to repair the water damage, but to make it an enjoyable redecorating project at the same time!
I recently faced the challenge of repairing the ceiling and a wall when my neighbor’s air conditioning system leaked into the main hallway of my home. Like a good neighbor, our friends upstairs had the leak repaired immediately and notified their insurance company of the damage to our home. Within about six weeks, we received a reasonable settlement which gave us enough money to repair the damage to the walls and ceiling.
Repair Water Damage and Then Redecorate
That six week wait was also enough time to let the damaged surfaces dry out thoroughly before we began working on them.
Step One – Scrape away all damaged pieces of wall and ceiling
Step Two – Fill any holes, cracks or gouges with spackle or plaster repair product
Step Three – Sand the entire area
Step Four – Apply two coats of a quality primer/sealer allowing recommended drying time in between coats (if water stains bleed through your sealer, they will bleed through your finish coat)
Step Five – Apply two coats of appropriate ceiling and wall paint
Step Six – Apply Wall Written decal
Add flowers, pictures and there you have it! A plumbing disaster turned into a very satisfying redecorating project.
